Why the Best Vacations Aren't Always the Busiest
Have you ever returned from a vacation feeling like you needed another vacation just to recover?
It's surprisingly easy to do. We have a list of places we've always dreamed of visiting, and naturally, we want to see as much as possible. Before we know it, our itinerary is filled from morning until night.
But over the years, I've come to appreciate something about planning memorable journeys: the best vacations aren't necessarily the ones where you see the most.
They're the ones where you have the time and freedom to truly enjoy where you are.
The Difference Between Seeing and Experiencing
Imagine spending a few days in Tuscany.
You could race from Florence to Siena, squeeze in San Gimignano, visit a winery, and still try to fit another village into the afternoon.
Or you could slow things down.
Spend a morning exploring a medieval town with a knowledgeable local guide. Enjoy a leisurely lunch overlooking the vineyards. Perhaps take a cooking class with a local chef, or simply relax on the terrace of a beautiful countryside hotel.
Both approaches take you to Tuscany. But they create very different memories.
When I help clients plan their travels, I encourage them to think beyond how many places they can visit and consider how they want to feel while they're there.
A journey that feels entirely your own.
Thoughtful Planning Changes Everything
Sometimes it's the smallest decisions that make the biggest difference.
Choosing a charming boutique hotel within walking distance of the historic centre rather than staying on the outskirts.
Arranging a private guide who can bring a destination's history and culture to life.
Allowing an extra night in a favourite city so there's time to explore without constantly checking the clock.
Or simply planning the journey in a way that avoids unnecessary transfers, backtracking and exhausting travel days.
These details might not sound particularly glamorous, but they're often what separates a good vacation from an exceptional one.
And that's where thoughtful, personalized travel planning makes a real difference.
There's No Such Thing as One Perfect Itinerary
Two couples can visit exactly the same destination and have completely different ideas about the perfect vacation.
One might dream of exploring ancient temples in Japan, discovering centuries of history and spending time with expert local guides.
Another might prefer traditional inns, beautiful gardens, regional cuisine and quieter countryside experiences.
Neither is right or wrong.
The same is true whether you're planning an African safari, a journey through Portugal, or an exploration of South America's remarkable landscapes.
What matters is that the experience reflects you.
Your interests. Your pace. Your priorities. And the experiences that will make your journey unforgettable.
In fact, some of the most memorable travel experiences are the ones you never planned.
A conversation with a local shopkeeper. A wonderful restaurant discovered by chance. An unexpected view that makes you stop and simply take it all in. Sometimes the best itinerary is the one that leaves a little room for spontaneity.
Travel Planning Should Be Personal
When someone comes to me about planning a vacation, I don't begin with a prearranged itinerary.
I begin with a conversation.
Where have you always wanted to go? What kinds of experiences do you enjoy? Do you love art and history, food and wine, outdoor adventures, or simply having time to absorb the atmosphere of a new place?
Just as importantly, how do you like to travel?
From there, I can help bring the pieces together into a thoughtfully planned journey that makes sense for you.
Because to me, custom travel isn't simply about arranging hotels, transportation and sightseeing.
It's about creating an experience that feels right from beginning to end.
